A man and a woman, both members of the US Navy, were found shot dead early Sunday in Wheeling

Wheeling police are investigating the deaths of a man and woman found fatally shot early Sunday morning near an intersection on the southwest side of the village.

Police say officers discovered the bodies around 4:50 a.m. while responding to a 911 call for someone on the roadway near Lakeview Drive and Buffalo Grove Road.

The shooting victims, who police believe were romantically involved, were found dead at the scene with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds, police said. A handgun was also found nearby, police said.

Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen said both were members of the United States Navy assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes. They did not live on base and had separate homes, Steffen said.

A man who identified himself as the man’s roommate in a nearby apartment building said the couple had an argument earlier on Sunday morning.

Police said investigators are working to piece together the couple’s activities before the shooting, process the scene and notify next of kin.

Based on the preliminary investigation and the evidence, police said they do not believe there is a threat to the community.
