HSG George Perez and his family took possession of the Fuquay Varina home built and donated in honor of his service in the U.S. Army
RALEIGH, North Carolina, November 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ – Operation: Coming Home and Mattamy Homes hosted an active military flyover and tour as part of a celebration that handed over the keys to U.S. Army Golden Knight SSG George Perez and his son for their given new home.
At 10am ceremony on November 10the old us army 82n/a An Airborne Division soldier took possession of the custom-built Hero Home 26 at Mattamy’s Providence Creek community in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.
Previously, a flag-raising ceremony in September honored the wounded veteran, who was seriously injured in Fallujah, Iraq during the Iraq war. An encounter with an improvised explosive device (IED) killed a member of Perez’s team and left Perez with severe injuries requiring the amputation of his left leg below the knee joint.
Rather than retiring, Perez resumed regular training as soon as he recovered enough to undertake the grueling regimen. He used his new prosthetic leg despite persistent, intense pain and regular, debilitating swelling. He joins the 82n/a Airborne Division in 2004 and eventually became the first Army amputee to qualify for static line jumps.
“As a society, we owe injured service members like HSG Perez an enormous debt of gratitude,” said Bob Wiggins, president of the Raleigh division of Mattamy Homes. “We are very pleased to present this home at no cost to a tireless and courageous veteran who has paid so much on our behalf.”
Many people spoke at the ceremony to acknowledge their appreciation for Perez. Key speakers included:
- Jim Burgin — North Carolina State Senator
- Howard Penny – North Carolina State Representative, District 53
- Lewis Spoon – President, Harnett County Board of Commissioners
- Bob Wiggins — Raleigh Division President, Mattamy Homes
- Paul Kane — Executive Vice President/CEO, Home Builders Association of Raleigh–Wake County
- David Price — President, Raleigh Wake County Home Builders Association
- Mike Elliot — President, The All Veteran Group
During the handover of the keys, officials and neighbors gathered at the site adjacent to the Perez house, located in the community of Providence Creek in Fuquay Varina.
Mattamy and Operation: Coming Home managed to surprise Perez and his son with an unplanned presentation. At a key moment, talented members of 82n/a Airborne Division Chorus rolled out of Perez’s new garage to regale all attendees with an assortment of American Songbook classics and Carolina songs.
Donors had generously provided the garage with plenty of freebies (including a Craftsman tool set and workspace) as well as building materials, land, and labor. A team from Mattamy Homes, alongside veterans and business partners, helped lay sod, build a custom 82n/a Airborne themed pantry and furnish multiple rooms in the house.
Mattamy chose the Perez residential site, while the family chose the design features. The homebuilder has customized the floor plan of the Clearwater French Country Ranch with accommodations for the veteran, including a zero-entry owner’s suite study and super shower with seat. Mattamy’s open-concept floor plan will enhance Perez’s everyday living and special gatherings with an attractive and flowing gourmet kitchen, dining room, great room, and screened-in porch.
“We hope SSG Perez and his son will enjoy their new home to the full,” continued Bob Wiggins. “Mattamy Homes looks forward to partnering with Operation: Coming Home to honor the next deserving veteran.”
The honoree, HSG Perez, was very grateful for the house and for the community that came together for the ceremony. “I want to thank everyone who showed up and everyone who helped. Let’s start a new chapter!”
The Perez House is the 11th house Mattamy has donated to Operation: Coming Home.
