DVIDS – News – US Army Corps of Engineers awards contract for Dunkirk port dredging

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $618,332 contract to Michigan-based Dean Marine & Excavating, Inc. on July 6, 2022, to perform dredging of the Federal shipping channel in the harbor from Dunkirk.
“The Port of Dunkirk is an economic engine for the surrounding community, but years of debris and sediment buildup have rendered parts of the canal unnavigable and threatened the continued operation of this vital waterway in western New York. That’s why I’m pleased to announce that the US Army Corps of Engineers has now awarded a contract worth over $600,000 to finally begin this desperately needed harbor cleanup,” said Senator Charles Schumer. “This will help communities in Chautauqua County and Western New York breathe easier and allow the full potential of port flow for both business, tourism and recreation. I say it’s full steam ahead for the harbor of Dunkirk!
“This contract award facilitates the necessary dredging and ensures that the Port of Dunkirk remains accessible for all recreational activities and commercial shipping of goods across the Great Lakes,” said Maj. Lyle Milliman, Buffalo District Deputy Commander. “Buffalo District, USACE maintains federal waterways through the lower Great Lakes, which support our local communities, like Dunkirk, as well as regional and national economies.”
A total of 30,000 cubic yards of material is contracted to be dredged from the Federal shipping channel: 15,000 cubic yards will be placed in the open lake and 15,000 cubic yards will be placed near shore. The dredging will focus on the federal shipping channel in the harbor and is expected to take place later this summer.
The harbor requires dredging every three years to remove approximately 60,000 cubic yards of material to maintain the navigation channel. The harbor was last dredged in 2018, when approximately 128,000 cubic yards of material was removed.
Dunkirk is a port of refuge and hosts 24 chartered fishing boats generating approximately $196,000 in net revenue per year, contributing to the local economy and that of the Great Lakes. The operation, maintenance and dredging of ports like Dunkirk by the USACE is essential to the economy of New York, the Great Lakes region and the United States.
