Who is Ernest Borgnine?

Ernest Borgnine was an American actor with a career spanning decades. Apart from this, he has also participated as a guest on talk shows and even as a panelist on many game shows.

He was born on January 24, 1917 in Hamden, Connecticut. The actor was quite famous for his gruff voice and gap-toothed smile with a net worth of $15 million.

The three-time Emmy-nominated star is remembered by fans for films like The Dirty Dozen, Cold War action flick Ice Station Zebra and revisionist western The Wild Bunch and the original voice of Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants as well as the villainous Carface Caruthers in 1996’s All Dogs Go to Heaven: The Series.

Early life and education

Ernest comes from a family of Italian immigrants. His parents, Anna and Camillo Borgnino separated briefly for two years. The little toddler lived with his mother in Italy, before they reunited in 1923.

He graduated from high school at James Hillhouse High School and loved sports and had no interest in gambling. Ernest then served in the United States Navy from 1935 to 1941, but re-enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He spent the next ten years there and graduated with the gunner’s mate first class. He won several military awards, including the World War II Victory Medal.

His acting career

After his discharge from the military, he moved back with his parents to Connecticut and worked at a local factory for a short time. Later, his mother motivated him to pursue a glamorous profession in the entertainment industry. Ernest joined the Randall School of Drama, then moved to Virginia to join the Barter Theater.

In 1949, he managed to land his first theatrical role in The State of the Union. From then on, he didn’t look back. Using his looks to his advantage, Ernest made his film industry debut with The Whistle at Eaton Falls in 1951. He got his first big break in Columbia’s From Here to Eternity, starring the sadistic Sergeant “Fatso” Judson.

He has appeared in several TV shows as well as movies such as The Flight of the Phoenix, Johnny Guitar, Murder, She Wrote, Bad Day at Black Rock, Captain Video, Magnum PI, ER, etc.

Private life

The SpongeBob SquarePants voiceover actor has been married five times in his life. Ernest married Rhoda Kemins in 1949 and had one daughter, Nancee, but the couple separated in 1958.

Just a year later, he dated actress Katy Jurado from 1959 to 1963. A man with a heart on his sleeves and a free spirit, he married singer Ethel Merman the following year for just 42 days. . Ernest then married Donna Rancourt after finalizing their third divorce in 1965. He and Donna had three children, Christopher, Sharon and Diana.

He then met his partner of 4 decades, Tova Traesnaes, on a blind date arranged by his friend Marty Allen. Ernest and Tova married in 1973 and lived together until his death in July 2012.

On July 8, 2012, at the age of 95, the actor died of kidney failure while at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
