Gujarat expects defense corridor before October | Ahmedabad News

Gandhinagar: As the Union Government has announced that its first Defense Expo, DefExpo 2022, will be held in Gandhinagar from October 18-22, Gujarat BJP Government expects the Union Government accepts its application for the granting of a defense industrial corridor in Gujarat.
States such as Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and others have been granted corridors for defense industries by the Union government.
The exhibition was previously scheduled to be held from March 10-14 in Gandhinagar but was postponed due to the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had written to the Union government and requested the allocation of a Defense Industries Corridor (DIC) and other facilities in Gujarat. States such as Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu got DICs in 2020.
The letter, written to the Union Defense Ministry during Vijay Rupani’s tenure, states: “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India campaign, the Government of India is promoting Defense Industrial Corridors (DICs) in the country. . However, despite several requests, Gujarat has yet to be assigned a DIC or Defense Public Sector Unit (PSU) or Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) Laboratories activity.
The letter further states, “Gujarat is an industrial state and has a very conducive environment for the defense industry. Gujarat has good environment for several defense corridors such as Kutch, Rajkot, Ahmedabad (Sanand), Surendranagar, Surat, Bharuch and other places. The government of Gujarat is keen to promote the defense industry in the state. Government of Gujarat can also provide land and other facilities in Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) if Government of India proposes Defense Industrial Corridor in Dholera SIR.
A key state government official said DefExpo is being held again and the government has again taken up the issue with the central government. “We have applied for a defense industrial corridor and major defense power supply production units in Gujarat. We hope the GOI will consider our request as it will attract defense manufacturing units to Gujarat.
Sources in the government have said that Gujarat has ample scope for developing arms and ammunition, manufacturing defense vehicles and manufacturing sophisticated defense equipment.
About 22 companies have defense manufacturing licenses for Gujarat from the Indian government, but most are awaiting long-term orders from the Union government to start operations. L&T has started a tank manufacturing plant in Hazira near Surat.
