Retired four-star US Army General Jack Keane said on Sunday he thought the Ukrainians had a good chance of defeating Russia, while saying the White House had encouraged Ukraine to “make a deal ” with Moscow to end the war.

“Ukrainians [can] actually… win,” Keane said, speaking on John Catsimatidis’ WABC radio show.

But “I think we are really at war. This will continue for some time,” he said.

Keane added that an “excellent source” told him President Biden’s administration encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “make a deal” with the Russians, which he called “shameful.” His claim has not been independently verified.

“The Russians were fought to a standstill by the Ukrainian army. They actually conduct limited counterattacks and retake territory. the [Russian] the ground attack is at a standstill. They still haven’t taken a big city,” he said, assessing the current military position of the Russians.

He suggested that the United States and NATO adopt the mindset that Ukraine can defeat the Russians and support them in their fight.

“People in the administration want to end it, instead of winning it. There is an opportunity here that we should really take advantage of for the good of the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian army who fought so valiantly,” said the former general.

His comments came as Biden wrapped up a visit to Europe where he urged NATO allies to remain united in their opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

In Biden’s speech a month after the invasion began, the president said Putin would not win until Europe was united against him and the Ukrainian people continued to fight back.
