US Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Karam Elzein, a native of San Bernardino, serves at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida.

Elzein joined the Navy two years ago. Today, he is a fencing master.

“I was the only one in my family to join the Navy,” Elzein said in a press release. “It provides a good structure and stability for my family and the possibility of traveling the world. “

Growing up in San Bernardino, Elzein attended Cajon High School and graduated in 2013. He also earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal State San Bernardino.

“I try to do my best in everything I do,” Elzein. “I was a wildlife firefighter and it inspired me to join the Navy. After being a firefighter, I learned that I could do whatever I wanted.

Of his accomplishments in the Navy, Elzein said he was most proud to have received a meritorious promotion to the rank of Petty Officer Second Class.

“I was the distinguished graduate of my school and I’m proud to be an E-5. My overall goal is to become a commissioned officer, ”Elzein said in the press release.

“When I first joined the Navy, it was an outlet for my calendar days. I needed something more than a living paycheck, ”Elzein said. “The more I learned about the Navy, the more proud I am to serve. It means a lot to my family, and the big puzzle is finally falling into place. “
