The researchers found that only 5% of the Spanish population, one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19, developed antibodies to fight the virus.
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – COVID-19 vaccine is still months, and unfortunately, Spanish researchers found it might be the only way to get life back to normal and end the COVID-19 pandemic.
Researchers studied herd immunity with regard to the coronavirus and the results were bad news for ending the pandemic before a vaccine was available. Herd immunity is what happens when enough of the population is exposed to a disease and develops antibodies to fight it.
Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease specialist, said last month that “a question of when, not if” the United States has a vaccine
“The typical vaccine for a new virus takes about five years to develop,” Pitts said. “So even having a vaccine in early 2021 is really a warp speed proposition.. And the reason we’re getting there is because the FDA is speeding it up but not rushing it, ”former FDA associate commissioner Peter Pitts said.
Vaccines are one of the best ways to get herd immunity, and scientists hoped we would have reached that level with COVID-19, even before a vaccine was ready. Now Spanish researchers have published a large-scale study on anti-coronavirus antibodies.

Although the country is among the hardest hit by COVID-19, scientists found that only 5% of the country’s population had developed antibodies. Doctors estimate that this number must reach around 60% to achieve collective immunity.
Researchers now say herd immunity to COVID-19 is fundamentally unachievable without a vaccine. And that’s not all; doctors still don’t know if having COVID-19 antibodies means you can no longer be infected.
