KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said hackers linked to Russian authorities attacked the Ukrainian naval forces website on Friday and published false reports on the international Sea Breeze-2021 military exercises.

Kiev began military exercises involving more than 30 Black Sea countries at the end of June, despite Russian calls to cancel the exercises.

“Now that the threats have been removed, the work of the Navy website will be restored in no time. Authorized divisions are working to update Internet resources to the appropriate level of protection,” the ministry said on Friday. Defense in a press release. .

The Russian Foreign Ministry was not immediately available for comment outside normal business hours.

Kiev has previously accused Russia of orchestrating cyber attacks as part of a “hybrid war” against Ukraine. Russia denies it.

Relations between Kiev and Moscow collapsed after Russia captured Crimea in 2014 and Russia supported a separatist rebellion in eastern Ukraine.

Tension rose again this year when Russia massed troops on the border with Ukraine, where some of them remain with their equipment.

During exercises conducted by Ukraine and NATO countries in the Black Sea, Russia tested the readiness of its air defense systems in Crimea.
